The Last Wish

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Things were not like this the last winter. Hector and Rose were exchanging presents with their family and had dishes of delicacy spread across the dining table. Although the icy snow surrounded their home but the warmth in the family melt the chilly air.

However, now drifting along the street of London with ragged clothes and tiny limbs, both shivers in the blink of death. Snow keep falling without mercy, covering their uncovered feet, and numbing them. Hector hugged Rose closely to him, trying to give all his body heat to Rose. "Sis, hang in there, the morning sun will be here soon." Hector tightened his grip.

Hector thought back of the painful past, of how their parents died in the car crashed after two days they had Christmas together last year. He took out the sapphire pedant from his ragged clothes and saw his reflection through it. It was the last present his mum left for him. It was the only thing Hector will never sell for food.

He remembered his mum told him that he can get any wishes from the pedant, when placed near to his heart and wish for want he wanted most.

Just then his sis interrupt his thoughts, "Brother… I can’t feel…. anything right now…. am I going to be like mum and dad….buried under the ground?"

"Don’t be silly, the sun will be out soon we will feel warm again, just dun fall asleep." At once, Hector grabbed the pedant and place it nears his heart and wished for the sun to appear soon like he did yesterday. "It wou….ldn’t work today bro… lets wish for something else." Rose took the pedant and places it in front of her chest and wished.

Silvery tears beam under the moonlight rolled down her pearl white face. "I can see it bro…. It is them, I knew mum and dad would come…" Hector knew at once what Rose wished for, and felt her presence leaving him every seconds. Without giving time any opportunity, Hector held Rose’s hands tightly and whispered, " I love you Rose.", while feeling Rose’s body turned icy and losing her energy. Moment past, as Rose’s weight now lied on Hector’s hands.

Staring far across the sky, Hector saw a stretch of red line cutting the sky into half, dividing the darkness and light. "You should have waited silly girl. " Hector picked up the pedant and placed once again near his heart and wished. "I wished to be with my family."
